In 2018, we raised funds to build a nice community park for Arroyo Tres, but time and hurricanes destroyed most of it. We want to give it a makeover and also buy a play structure that withstands the weathering of time.

Remember playing in a park when you were small? Sliding down the slides and swinging on the swings? Maybe even getting motion sickness from that dangerous spinning one where you hold on with every inch of your 9 year old body muscle so you wouldn't fly into oblivion? Well, 6 years ago, most kids in Arroyo Tres had none of these memories. We wanted to start a project to begin the process of helping and improving our community and time after time, people mentioned the fact that there was no park in town. So, we set up a crowdfunding campaign and we got started.
It wasn't the prettiest park ever. It was roots, basic and awesome. The community showed up during 4 "tequio" community work days to make it all come together and we had a big pot luck, games, prizes, dancing and more to celebrate. The park even had a huge shade cloth that kept it cool under the pounding sun of the Oaxacan Coast.
But...time is the great destroyer. Wind and rain and rust did a number on the park and though it wasn't in the best condition, kids still played on it. But on May 30th, 2022 Hurricane Agata, a Category 2 whopper that pounded our area for 6 straight hours served as the coup de grace.
The surprising thing is that kids still play on what is left of the park, but they deserve more. We have about 17,000 pesos or 1,000 dollars that our newly formed Park Committee is going to use to get rid of the rust, buy new paint, patch up the wood, buy new rope, and make the existing park sparkle. We're going to cut the shade cloth in four parts to make it stronger and more durable over the years. With just this, our park will be back on line.
However, this crowdfunding is to buy a new and awesome play structure made of materials that won't disintegrate in 4 years. There are a variety of play structures with a variety of pricing from 50,000 pesos to 250,000 pesos. Depending on how this campaign goes will depend on what kind of structure we can buy, but our hope is between 100-150 thousand pesos. Or 6-8000 US dollars. Our Park Committee has a treasurer from Switzerland who keeps track of finances so rest assured, every penny will be counted and be streamlined to the purchase of the play structure.
Finally...THANK YOU! You know that in Mexico, a little goes a long way, but sometimes raw material costs the same here as they do anywhere. We're a town that takes care of itself as money from the municipal and state governments rarely arrives here, and we're doing it alone.
